Canadian Virtual University - How to Become a Social Worker

becoming a social worker in canada

To become a social worker in Canada, you require either a diploma or a degree in social work. In most Canadian provinces, a Bachelor of Social Work (B.SW.) is the mandatory credential.

A two-year diploma in social work is usually not sufficient to be registered as a social worker in most provinces. However, the diploma may be used in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or the Yukon where the profession of social worker is not regulated.

Two Canadian Virtual University partner universities offer a B.SW. by distance education:

  1. University of Manitoba offers a distance B.SW. for individuals working in social services. You must have at least two years recent experience and must meet the mature or general admission requirements for the University of Manitoba.
  2. Laurentian University offers a distance B.SW. specializing in Native Human Services. This program develops professional competence in culturally appropriate practice with First Nations. Admission is based on completing one year of studies.

It also offers the only French distance social services program in Canada.

Professional Licensure

This profession is regulated in all provinces in Canada, but not in Northwest Territories, Nunavut, or the Yukon. The term "regulated" means that the titles of Social Worker and Registered Social Worker are reserved in legislation for those who meet the qualifications and standards set by the provincial regulatory bodies.

Both the University of Manitoba and Laurentian University are members of the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work (CASSW). CASSW is the policy and standard-setting organization for university level social work education in Canada.

Foreign Credentials

If you completed some coursework or a credential at a recognized university outside Canada, you may be eligible for some transfer credit. Please see foreign credential recognition.

If you hold a B.SW. degree from another country, you may not be required to take additional courses. Instead, you may be eligible for direct licensure. For details, contact CASSW.
